The Pentax 645 right angle viewfinder, or the ‘Refconverter 645’, is a handy accessory for this popular camera line. There isn’t anything unique about this finder, it simply enables you to get into comfortable positions while shooting in low (or other odd) angles.

To use, the existing eye cup must be unscrewed from the camera body and the finder attached in it’s place. There are two different model versions floating around. My version is smooth over the body’s entire surface. However, the second version has a hammer-tone finish on the section closest to the camera. I find that the viewfinder is a bit slippery while handling, so the hammer-tone model would be preferred. That being said, just be careful during installation. I may put some gaffer tape around the barrel for better grip (especially when shooting with gloves).

The eyepiece also rotates to accommodate portrait orientation. The rotation is smooth and firm. It has a good amount of resistance, ensuring it says wherever it’s stopped. Since the finder attaches in place of the existing rubber eye cup, the diopter operation is unchanged.

While hiking, I pack my smaller tripod to save on space and weight. To keep the heavy Pentax from inducing shake, I keep the legs as low as possible. This 90° adapter will save my back and knees during shoots. It will, however, add more weight to my kit.

If you use your Pentax 645 for landscape or studio photography, you owe it to yourself to pick one up. These are readily available, complete in box, on eBay.
